Ask five contractors to price the same driveway and you'll get five different numbers. That's not because someone's trying to rip you off. It's because a concrete driveway is mostly invisible once it's poured, and what's underneath it and inside it is where most of the cost actually lives.
In the Shreveport area, plain gray concrete driveways typically run $6 to $9 per square foot. Stamped or colored concrete runs $12 to $18 per square foot, sometimes more if you want a pattern that needs a lot of hand detailing at the edges. A standard two-car driveway is around 500 to 600 square feet, which puts plain concrete somewhere between $3,600 and $5,400, and stamped concrete between $7,200 and $10,800. Wider driveways, circle drives, or anything with a heavy turnaround area for a truck or trailer will push those numbers up because you're adding thickness and reinforcement, not just square footage.
What's under the slab matters more than what's on top
Shreveport sits on a lot of expansive clay, sometimes called gumbo clay locally. It swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries out, and that movement is what cracks driveways that were poured directly on native soil with no real base under them. A proper job means excavating out the topsoil and organic material, then bringing in 4 to 6 inches of crushed limestone or compacted gravel and running a plate compactor over it in layers, not just dumping it and driving over it once with a truck tire.
This is the step that's easiest to skip and hardest to notice on a quote. A contractor who quotes $6 a square foot and one who quotes $9 a square foot might be using the exact same bag of concrete mix. The difference is usually in how much base prep, grading, and compaction time is actually built into the lower number, which is often none.
What's in the slab
A residential driveway should be poured at least 4 inches thick. If you're planning to park an RV, a boat trailer, or anything heavier than a pickup on it regularly, ask for 5 to 6 inches in that section. Concrete strength matters too. We use a mix rated at 3,500 to 4,000 PSI for driveways, which holds up to the freeze-thaw cycles Shreveport gets a handful of times each winter and the summer heat that dries the surface fast during the pour.
Rebar, wire mesh, or fiber
Wire mesh is the cheapest reinforcement and it's still common, but it tends to sink to the bottom of the slab during the pour if it isn't propped up on chairs, which means it does almost nothing. Rebar, usually #3 bar set on a 2-foot grid, costs more in labor because it has to be tied and blocked up off the base, but it stays where you put it and actually resists cracking. A lot of quotes that look cheap are using mesh laid flat on the ground instead.
Control joints
Concrete is going to crack. That's not a flaw, it's just what the material does as it cures and shrinks. Control joints are cut into the slab on purpose, usually every 8 to 10 feet, so the crack happens along a straight line you planned instead of wherever the slab decides on its own. We cut these within the first 24 hours after the pour, while the concrete is green enough to cut clean but hard enough to hold the joint. Skip this step, or cut the joints too far apart, and you'll get random cracking across the middle of the driveway within a year or two.
Why one quote is $3,000 less than another
- No excavation of the old surface, or shallow excavation that leaves organic soil under the base.
- Thinner base layer, or a base layer that wasn't compacted in passes.
- 3-inch slab instead of 4-inch, which you cannot tell by looking at the finished surface.
- Wire mesh instead of rebar, or mesh that's laid flat instead of raised.
- No fiber additive in the mix, which helps control surface cracking as the top layer dries faster than the core.
- Cutting corners on drainage slope, so water pools instead of running off toward the street.
- Skipping expansion joints where the driveway meets the garage slab or the sidewalk, which lets those two slabs crack against each other as they move independently.
None of these show up in a walk-through the day the job's finished. They show up two winters later as a spiderweb of cracks or a slab that's heaved a half inch at one edge.
Timeline and what you can actually control
A standard driveway pour takes one day for the concrete itself, but the full job usually runs 3 to 5 days once you count demolition of the old surface, excavation, base prep and compaction, forming, and the pour. You can walk on the new concrete after about 24 to 48 hours. Give it 5 to 7 days before you drive a car on it, and closer to 28 days before it's at full strength, though it's structurally fine for daily use well before that.
Weather is the one thing nobody can quote around. Shreveport summers bring afternoon storms that can shut down a pour with almost no warning, and concrete poured in high heat sets faster on the surface than it cures underneath, which means finishing crews have to move quicker to get the texture and joints right before it sets up. A contractor who tells you an exact pour date three weeks out and won't move it for rain is telling you something about how they handle the rest of the job too.
What to actually ask for in a quote
Get the thickness in writing. Get the base depth and material in writing. Get the reinforcement type in writing, rebar or mesh, and if it's mesh, ask how it's supported during the pour. Ask where the control joints go and how soon after the pour they're cut. A quote that only lists a total price and a square footage isn't giving you enough to compare against anything else.
